Sweet As
A visually stunning, gentle, uplifting road trip of an insecure 16-year-old indigenous teenager in picturesque historical Western Australia to re-discover oneself, battle inner demons, and learn about first love. Debutant director Jub Clerc resonates memories and experiences of her own troubled childhood with confident charm. On the way to Tartu, she has already collected the Crystal Bear in Berlin, the NETPAC award in Toronto and the Australian innovation award in Melbourne.
Talented, but closed-off photographer Murra reluctantly follows the advice of her policeman uncle to join a guided tour for emotionally wounded at-risk kids. A week-long camping trip in the wild Aboriginal homeland inspires Murra and her three traumatized friends to see new possibilities, challenges, discoveries and hopes while reconnecting with her ancestral roots and trying to resolve a rebellious conflict with her addict mother. It is a sensitive, captivating, subtle, bright, and exotic film for younger audiences as well as older spectators, who aim to experience a rare magnetic gem of Aboriginal cinema.
