Portrait Of A Certain Orient (Brazil, Italy 2024, dir Marcelo Gomes) 6 August at 22:00
The film takes place in the Amazon, and is a melodrama by Brazilian director Marcelo Gomes. A passionate love triangle begins on a ship sailing from Lebanon to Brazil in 1949, where the pains of the past and religious intolerance lead to violence. It is an adaptation of a book by one of Brazil's most important contemporary writers, Milton Hatoum, and a tribute to the openness and traditions of the indigenous people of the Amazon.

Chaperone (USA 2024, dir Zoë Eisenberg) 7 August at 22:00
US filmmaker Zoë Eisenberg's subdued romantic drama tells the story of a 28-year-old woman who begins a relationship with a 19-year-old boy. The boy believes that the woman is also 19-ish years old and that they study at the same university. Shot on location on the island of Hawaii, this authentic and intimate film explores the fears, lies and deceptions of complex relationships and love.

The Shameless (Switzerland, Bulgaria, Taiwan, France, India 2024, dir Konstantin Bojanov) 7 August at 23:59
Through a rebellious Hindu woman forced to sell her body, Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov's 'The Shameless' throws down the gauntlet of Indian society's outdated beliefs - a brutal reality hidden from the outside world. Anasuya Sengupta won the best actress award for her performance in the role in the "Un Certain Regard" side-event at the Cannes Film Festival.

Gondola (Georgia, Germany 2024, dir Veit Helmer) 8 August at 22:00
The two conductors fall in love when their gondolas pass each other on the ropeway every half hour - only the absurdist Veit Helmer could come up with such an extraordinary love story. The new romantic comedy from the author of Tuvalu, Absurdistan and The Breast-Holder, will be screened for the first time in Estonia at the PÖFF Love Film Festival Tartuff. This is a silent film - none of the characters say a word!
"There are few places in the world where you can only get around by rope, and one of them is in the mountains of Georgia," the author himself has revealed his sources of inspiration.

Afloat (Turkey, 2023) 8 August at 23:59
When a family gets together after a long time, you'd think it wouldn't end like that - as in Turkish director's Aslihan "Afloat", set on a sailboat sailing along the Aegean coast. The shadows of the past surface during an innocent holiday trip and threaten to ruin an already fragile relationship. The film, about Turkey's not exactly the most democratic political climate, went without public funding in its home country.

The Animal (Greece, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus 2023, dir Sofia Exarchou) 10 August at 23:59

"The show must go on," runs through Greek director Sofia Exarchou's film, in which a man sacrifices his body and soul to separate the minds of holidaymakers. The film, which crosses the world of the all-priced-at-a-glance entertainer, won seven Greek Film Academy Awards.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST...THE CLASSICS

Forty years after its premiere, Italian director Sergio Leone's magnificent gangster drama Once Upon a Time in America returns to the screen in Tartu in an extended version lasting... 4 hours and 11 minutes. The screening will take place on the 9th of August at 22:30 at the Tartu Town Hall Square.

The 19th edition of the largest outdoor film festival in the Baltics takes place from 5-10 August.

The festival is a satellite open air festival of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.
