The Shameless
A fast-paced, gripping, and carnal thriller that exposes the shadowy underworld of forced female prostitution in India. Selfish, lecherous men control women's bodies. Families sell their daughters as young as 12 or 13 into sexual slavery. Bulgarian nomad Konstantin Bojanov ("Avé", "Light Thereafter") explores the authentic brutal realities, religious beliefs, political protections and (il)legal traditions from the perspective of a European witness.
An unspecified city hides the dirty secrets of a shameful patriarchal caste society. Feisty Renuka kills a corrupt policeman in cold blood. She runs away to somewhere in northern India and befriends beautiful teenager Devika, whose greedy mother offers to sell her virginity to the highest bidder. Their unlikely friendship grows into a forbidden love as Renuka lures Devika into her precarious world of drugs, sex, crime and freedom.
Anasya Sengupta is a tour-de-force in her first leading role and deservedly won the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2024. Young debutant Omara Shetty is even more impressive, confirming once again that Konstantin Bojanov is a perfect director of actors.
