Patrick and the Whale
Have you ever imagined a possible love affair between a man and a whale weighing around 12,200 kg?
Sounds incredible and rather unlikely, but that is exactly what a former lawyer Patrick Dykstra experienced. He abandons an excellently paid job for undefined scientific adventures on the open waters in various corners of our beautiful world, learns how to spot whales, dolphins, and other underwater mammals and develops unique behavioural skills to gain the necessary trust of magnificent gigantic creatures. Patrick experiences a life-affirming event in the Caribbean Sea in 2019 as the young diver-videographer forms a close bond with a lonely female sperm whale, whom he names Dolores. Very slowly they swim closer and closer. She seems curiously interested in him and Patrick tries to study her respectfully without crossing the borders of trust. They communicate with each other deeply. One year after the almost impossible adventure, Patrick meets Dolores again near the island of Dominica. Believe it or not, the very special whale recognises the gifted researcher and allows another touching and intimate close encounter, which inspires Patrick to use this extraordinary opportunity to collect more precious details of the never seen deep underwater world of sperm whales.
British director Mark Fletcher with 25 years of experience in wildlife documentaries follows endlessly fascinated dreamer Patrick with jaw-droppingly breathtaking footage, which looks more splendid than most magical fairytales and is indescribable.
